Diabetes Educator Course
The Core of Education and Care

Whether you are just entering the field of Diabetes Education or are looking for a comprehensive review of the latest in diabetes management and training, this day course is designed for you. This program will provide you with the state-of-the-art information in diabetes care while increasing your confidence in taking the (CDE) Certified Diabetes Educator Exam*.  Through lecture, group activities, workshops and case studies, our diabetes experts will highlight the critical knowledge, skills and strategies needed to succeed in diabetes education today!  We now start on Wednesday evening.

Who Should Attend?

This comprehensive, fast-paced course is designed for health care professionals who want to increase their knowledge in diabetes education, care and management. It will also benefit those who are planning to take the CDE Exam* or need continuing education hours to maintain their CDE.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, the successful participant will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast normal physiology with the pathological changes that take place in type 1
    and type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.
  • Explain therapeutic action and side effects from medication therapy.
  • Choose appropriate insulin adjustment based on glucose patterns.
  • Describe the principles of behavior change and adult learning.
  • Describe medical nutrition therapy and the use of pattern management to improve outcomes.
  • Discuss identification and management of acute diabetes complications.
  • Identify the role and limitations of diabetes exercise programs.
  • Discuss the chronic complications associated with diabetes.
  • State self-care strategies and goals during the lifespan and pregnancy.
  • Discuss the chronic complications and goals of care for diabetes.  
  • Have fun learning about diabetes and networking with colleagues.

Course Details:

The course starts on Wednesday evening at 6:00 - 8:15pm and continues on Thursday and Friday from 8:00am to 4:45pm. Participants must complete all three days to receive credit.  The registration fee of $399 includes a pre/post test, program syllabus, certificate of completion, breakfast and refreshments for both days, lunch on Friday.  In the event of non-attendance or cancellation, participants can receive a full refund, less $55 in administrative fees.

*To see if you qualify to take the CDE exam, please contact the National Credentialing Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) at 847/228-9795 or visit their web site at www.ncbde.org. The CDE exam is offered annually in May and October.

Accreditation

Provider approved by California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #12640 for 18.0 contact hours. Registered Dietitians: Approved for 16 CPE III by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). The California State Board of Pharmacy recognizes BRN accredited programs for CE credit. Since this program is approved by the CDR it satisfies the CE requirements for the CDE.

Course Faculty

Beverly Dyck Thomassian, RN, MPH, BC-ADM, CDE

Author, Nurse, Educator and Clinician, Beverly Dyck Thomassian has specialized in diabetes management for the past fifteen years . Her work experience includes establishing outpatient ADA Recognized Diabetes Education programs for HMOs and hospitals to implementing innovative inpatient diabetes care programs for hospitals such as Stanford University Medical Center. She is Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management and has been published in the American Journal of Nursing, NurseWeek, Progress for Cardiovascular Nursing, Stanford Nurse and the Japanese Journal of Nursing.

Beverly is a nationally recognized speaker and consultant, dedicated to improving diabetes care. She is a working educator, currently serving as a Diabetes Program Manager and is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the graduate-nursing program at UCSF. As president and founder of Diabetes Educational Services, Beverly is dedicated to optimizing diabetes care and improving the lives of those with diabetes.

Diane M. Pearson RN, CDE, PHN, MPH

Community Educator, Motivational Speaker, Nurse, and Author, Diane M. Pearson has been a Diabetes Educator for the past 18 years in the hospital, outpatient, school and community setting. Her experience includes developing creative diabetes care and education programs for the University of California in San Diego (hospital), local and national Home Health Agencies, Out-Patient Clinics and diabetes prevention programs for youth within the San Diego School System.

Diane recently completed her Masters in Public Health with a project focusing on behavior lifestyle change for youth with Type 2 diabetes. She has been published in the RN, NurseWeek, Diabetes Interview, and has contributed to several San Diego wellness and health columns. She has spoken both city-wide and nationally on behavior change and diabetes management and enjoys the challenge and the rewards that working with people dealing with diabetes offers.

Diane has appeared on TV and radio carrying the passion and message of hope for those with diabetes through individualized self-care and believes in using humor, story telling and creative problem solving in making health solutions relevant and realistic to her audiences. She is currently working in an ADA research study with couples with diabetes and is president elect of the San Diego Association of Diabetes Educators. She is founder of Diabetes Care Consultants, a private educational business, since 1997.

Dana Armstrong, RD, CDE

Dana received her degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of California, Davis and completed her internship in dietetics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She has been in private practice for 20 years and has developed a self-management education program that has benefited more than 4000 patients with diabetes.

She is the cofounder and program director of the Diabetes Care Center in Salinas, California. She specializes in and speaks nationally on the use of nondiet approaches to disease treatment, specifically diabetes. She has coauthored numerous papers on thiazolidinedione treatment in diabetes, insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring systems, and has coauthored and published a book on diabetes for the consumer and a treatment guide book for midlevel practitioners.

Together, in 1998, she and Allen King, MD, FACE, CDE opened a private practice focused on the treatment, education and support of people with diabetes. Their philosophy is to empower patients who have diabetes with knowledge and education that lets patients control their health, life and future.
